TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is one of the most widely used formats in professional imaging — yet many people encounter .tif or .tiff files and have no idea what they are or what to do with them. This guide covers everything you need to know.


TIFF File Basics

The TIFF format was created in 1986 by Aldus Corporation (later acquired by Adobe) to serve as a universal file format for scanned images. The "tagged" in the name refers to the format's use of metadata tags — small descriptors embedded in the file that describe everything about the image: dimensions, color depth, compression method, resolution, and more.

You'll see TIFF files with two file extensions:

  • .tiff — the full extension
  • .tif — the shorter, older 3-character extension inherited from DOS/Windows naming limits

Both extensions refer to exactly the same format.


How TIFF Stores Image Data

TIFF is a container format — it can store image data in several different ways depending on the use case:

  • Uncompressed (baseline TIFF): Raw pixel data with no compression applied. Maximum fidelity, maximum file size. Common in medical imaging and scientific contexts where computational processing is required.
  • LZW compression: Lossless compression (the same algorithm used in GIF). Reduces file size by 20–40% for most images with zero quality loss.
  • DEFLATE compression: The same lossless algorithm used by PNG, also available as a TIFF compression option.
  • JPEG compression: TIFF can even store JPEG-compressed data internally, though this is rarely used and defeats the purpose of using TIFF.

TIFF also supports high bit depth — while most consumer images are 8-bit per channel (24-bit total for RGB), TIFF supports:

  • 16-bit per channel: 65,536 tonal values instead of 256 — critical for professional photo editing
  • 32-bit per channel: Full floating-point data for HDR imaging and scientific measurement
  • CMYK color space: Four-channel printing standard (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) that JPEG and PNG cannot represent

TIFF vs JPG

The most common question: should I save as TIFF or JPG?

  • TIFF is lossless: It preserves every pixel exactly as captured. There are no compression artifacts, no blurring around edges, no color banding.
  • JPG is lossy: Every time you save a JPEG, it discards some data to achieve smaller file sizes. Re-saving a JPEG repeatedly degrades quality visibly.

Use TIFF when the image is a source master you'll edit and export from repeatedly. Use JPG when the image is finished and needs to be delivered, shared online, or displayed in a browser.

A typical workflow: shoot RAW → export to 16-bit TIFF for editing → export to JPG for delivery.


TIFF vs PNG

Both are lossless, so why choose one over the other?

  • TIFF is for professional print and archival. It supports CMYK, multi-page documents, high bit depth, and scanner-native output.
  • PNG is for the web and screen. It's compressed much more efficiently, supports alpha transparency, and loads natively in browsers.

A 24MP camera image saved as TIFF will typically be 70–150 MB. The same image as PNG will be 20–40 MB. For web use, a compressed JPG or WebP of the same image might be 3–8 MB.


Common TIFF Use Cases

  • Flatbed and document scanners: Nearly every scanner defaults to TIFF for archival quality scans.
  • Professional photography: RAW-to-TIFF export preserves all editing headroom — 16-bit TIFF lets you recover highlights and shadows that would clip in 8-bit formats.
  • Print production and publishing: Commercial printers and repro houses specify TIFF with CMYK profiles for magazine pages, book covers, and advertising artwork.
  • Medical imaging: X-ray, MRI, and CT imaging systems use TIFF (and the related DICOM format) for high-bit-depth diagnostic images.
  • Satellite and aerial imagery: Geographic information systems store multi-spectral satellite data in GeoTIFF, a TIFF variant with GPS coordinates embedded.
  • Legal and archival scanning: Court systems and government archives use multi-page TIFF for document preservation.

Why TIFF is Impractical for the Web

A 24MP camera TIFF exported at 16-bit is routinely 70–150 MB per image. Consider what that means for web use:

  • A product page with 10 photos: potentially 1.5 GB of images
  • Page load time at average broadband: several minutes
  • Mobile data cost: prohibitive

TIFF has no native browser support — you cannot embed a .tiff file in an HTML <img> tag and expect it to display in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. It simply won't render.

For web delivery, always convert TIFF to JPG, PNG, or WebP.
